McLaren er stiftet af Bruce McLaren i 1963 under navnet Bruce McLaren Motor Racing. Bruce McLaren er født i New Zealand, og kørte for det britiske Cooper formel 1 team. Første formel 1 optræden for McLaren fandt sted i 1966 i Monaco, siden er det blevet til otte VM titler for konstruktører og 12 mesterskaber for kørere.
